Hawaii has a long history of environmental stewardship dating back to the ancient Hawaiians. They lived in harmony with the land and the sea and had a complex social structure that managed resources. Unfortunately, modern day agriculture and development has decimated much of Hawaii’s native habitat and has put many of Hawaii’s rarest species of plants and birds at risk of extinction. The Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative has been working with individuals and businesses to restore these vital ecosystems through the hand planting of more than 450,000 rare and endangered Hawaiian species; creating pristine habitat for Hawaii’s endangered owls (Pueo), hawks (`Io) and other birds in the world’s first Hawaiian Legacy Forest.
Your Jet-Set Offset contributions will go towards the planting of native Hawaiian trees. We will track your miles and donations over time, and for every 9,000 miles flown, or $90 donated, a tree will be hand planted in your name. What makes these trees unlike any other is that they contain an innovative radio-frequency identification (RFID) geo-tagging technology that accurately verifies each tree’s location, ongoing growth, maintenance, genealogy, and carbon sequestration data. For you, the Legacy Tree sponsor, this technology allows you to track your planted tree(s) over its lifetime using www.findmy.LegacyTrees.org. These lands were once the personal koa forest of King Kamehameha the great, and with your help, we can return these lands to their former glory. Through the sponsorship of a single tree, your contribution can leave a lasting legacy-- not only for this generation, but the next.
Note: The Hawaiian Legacy Forest is Hawaii’s first certified carbon project in Hawaii and has been certified by the prestigious Gold Standard Foundation based in Switzerland. It is the first in the world to produce certified carbon credits for the reforestation of endemic Hawaiian trees and is the first Gold Standard certified forest carbon project in all North America.
